A Gift To Eternity....

For some reason I've been thinking about something my pastor, Dr. Barry Culberson said to me once in a brief, but profound conversation. I had just met him and his wife at their annual Christmas party, as we were new to the church. He asked if we had any children and I told him that we didn't and that I wasn't sure I wanted any. He looked at me sort of surprised and said that children were a blessing. And he went on to say something like this (paraphrasing), "Think about this. When you and your husband create a baby together, you're really creating a life that will go on forever and ever and ever...into eternity. Isn't that powerful? That God gives us that ability?"

And he just left it at that. But I was amazed. I had never thought of it that way! We really do have the ability to create a gift that we give to eternity. How awesome a thought. I almost can't wrap my mind around it.

I also found this quote today that sort of pulls this all together. My prayer is that I raise my own daughter with the same vision for her that God has...an eternal one.

"Oh that God would give every mother a vision of the glory and splendor of the work that is given to her when a babe is placed in her bosom to be nursed and trained! Could she have but one glimpse into the future of that life as it reaches on into eternity; could she look into its soul to see its possibilities; could she be made to understand her own personal responsibility for the training of this child, for the development of its life, and for its destiny,--she would see that in all God's world there is no other work so noble and so worthy of her best powers, and she would commit to no others' hands the sacred and holy trust given to her." -JR Miller
